Vocational Nursing Training in Germany – Working Conditions and Requirements

Training to become a registered nurse is a state-recognized vocational training program in Germany. It usually lasts three years full-time. After successfully completing the program, graduates can work as qualified nurses, for example in nursing homes, outpatient care services, hospitals, or other healthcare institutions.

How is the vocational training structured?
The training consists of two important areas:
Theoretical lessons at a nursing school
Practical placements in different institutions, for example nursing homes, outpatient care services, and hospitals.

Note: We exclusively place candidates in nursing homes. This means that you will complete most of your practical training in a nursing home. The goal is that after your training, you will be employed as a qualified nurse in the nursing home if you like working there.

In theory classes at the vocational school, the following topics are taught, among others:
• Structure and functions of the human body
• Diseases and medications
• Hygiene
• Care planning
• Care documentation
• Rights and laws
• Communication with patients and relatives

What does everyday work look like?
Nursing means responsible work with people. Daily tasks include, for example:
• Assistance with personal hygiene (e.g. washing, bathing, using the toilet)
• Help with eating and drinking
• Mobilization of patients
• Measuring blood pressure
• Wound care
• Preparation and administration of medication under supervision
• Documentation of all nursing measures

It is important to know: In nursing, you work very closely with people. Difficult situations, physical limitations, illnesses, and the death of people are also part of everyday professional life.

Working hours in nursing
Anyone working in nursing must be flexible. It is common to rotate between early shifts, late shifts, and night shifts. Working on weekends and public holidays is also part of the job.

Regular office hours do not normally exist in this profession.

What qualities should you have?
Nursing training is demanding – professionally, physically, and emotionally. Therefore, the following qualities are especially important:
• Enjoyment in working with people
• Patience and respect
• Sense of responsibility
• Ability to work in a team
• Physical resilience
• Mental stability
• Reliability
• Willingness to work shifts

The training is especially suitable for people who want to work in this profession long-term and have a genuine interest in nursing care. Anyone who does not want to do shift work or feels uncomfortable with close physical contact should reconsider their decision. Motivation and interest in the profession are important requirements for successful completion.

Why the training is worth it
Nursing is a secure, respected, and socially very important profession with good future prospects. Those who are committed and enjoy working with people can find a meaningful professional future in Germany.

Currently, we are looking exclusively for nursing professionals or individuals who wish to start a vocational nursing training.

For the start of a vocational nursing training, language level B2 is required. For entry as a skilled worker in the nursing sector, at least language level B2 is required as well. You need a recognized language certificate (e.g., Telc, Goethe-Zertifikat, ÖSD, TestDaF) as proof of your language skills.

In order to start an apprenticeship, your school-leaving certificate must be recognized. To do this, you must submit an application and provide proof of a suitable school certificate (at least 10 years of school attendance). This must include certain subjects, such as mathematics, two languages or at least one science subject. A certificate in English does not need to be translated, whereas certificates in other languages require a certified translation. We will be happy to advise you on this.

In order to work as a skilled worker, your foreign qualification/professional qualification must be recognized. To do this, you must submit an application for recognition to the Thuringian State Office of Administration, to which you must submit various documents. We will support you throughout the entire recognition process. You can find general information on the recognition of foreign professional qualifications on the recognition portal. Depending on the decision of the Thuringian State Office of Administration, you will receive full recognition or a so-called notice of deficit with partial recognition. The notice of deficit describes the differences to the German vocational qualification and how you need to obtain additional qualifications. This can mean catching up on theoretical and/or practical elements, which you can do in Germany with an employer or on a course. We will also help you here and explain the exact steps.

The costs incurred vary greatly from person to person, as they depend on factors such as your German language skills, your goal of pursuing vocational training or working as a skilled professional, the documents you need or already have, and your travel arrangements. However, our project is fundamentally based on the “employer-pays principle.” This means that the employer covers as many of your costs as possible. This may include, for example, travel expenses or a language course. This must always be arranged individually with the employer. During a personal consultation, we will break down the costs that are likely to arise.

After entering the country, you must apply for a residence permit at the Immigration Office, among other things. This costs 100 euros. In addition, after entering the country, you will primarily need cash and money for daily expenses (cell phone plan, public transportation, groceries, internet, etc.) as well as for your first month’s rent. We will inform you in advance of your departure about the occurring costs after your arrival.

The length of the process varies greatly from person to person and depends on various factors, such as visa processing, the processing of your application for recognition, and your language proficiency. Overall, it can take several months before all the requirements for entry are met. Please contact us to schedule a personalized consultation and assessment.

After you arrive, you’ll need to go to the immigration office, for example. Your employer will support you.

Your work is paid according to a set pay scale that applies to all employees at the employer’s company. The starting salary for a registered nurse is currently just over €3,400 gross wage (for full-time employment). As you gain more work experience, your earnings will increase. However, if you have a degree from abroad, it is common to receive a deficit note ("Defizitbescheid") and be required to complete an adjustment program. Until this is completed, you may initially only work as a nursing assistant. As a nursing assistant, you earn approximately €2,730 gross wage (for full-time employment).

A vocational training is an educational pathway in which you learn a specific profession. The training usually lasts three years and is conducted on a dual basis. This means that you acquire theoretical knowledge at a vocational school while also receiving on-the-job training at your employer, where you work and gain practical experience. This ensures you are optimally prepared for your further career. You receive an trainee allowance for your work during the program. Depending on the employer, the theoretical and practical phases alternate at a specific interval (e.g., weekly or monthly). In addition to an interim exam, you must pass a final exam at the end of the apprenticeship that tests the theoretical and practical knowledge you have acquired.

Yes, you earn money during your nursing training. In the first year of training, you earn €1,415 gross wage. In the second and third years of training, your training allowance increases slightly each year.

You will receive 30 days of paid vacation both during your training and while working as a registered nurse (full-time).

Your employer will help you find suitable housing or provide you with an apartment to rent. After you arrive, you may initially stay in a dorm room or share an apartment with others. However, everyone always has their own bedroom.
